Renato Borghetti
(Brazil)

Renato Borghetti (accordion), Daniel de Sa Leite (guitar), Vitor Peixoto (piano) and Pedro Figueiredo (saxophone, flute).
The roots of the members of the Renato Borghetti Quartet are close to the gauchos of the Rio Grande do Sul, in the southernmost region of Brazil, which shares a border with Argentina. Band leader Borghetti uses the “gaita ponto”, a button-box accordion, that possesses great power and intensity. Renato mixes in his own unique way traditional styles like melonga, chacarera and chamame with pop, jazz, fado and tango influences. “Borghettino”, as he is called by his fans, has produced records for more than 20 years now, but stays loyal to his original gaucho style. He shared the stage with among others Stephane Grapelli, Ron Carter and Hermeto Pascoal. His second album was the first gold record in Brazil ever, featuring exclusively instrumental music. His album & DVD “Fandango!!”, released in Europe in March 2009 (Felmay), has been nominated for a Grammy Latino.

Watching Renato Borghetti and his musicians play is spectacular, some kind of ball game, full of energy and humour. His playing is uncompromising in its loyalty to a folkloric past, adventurous in its openness to new ideas.
