Kristal Klaar Bassoon

The first concert in the series of the 7th edition of “Kristal Klaar” is entirely dedicated to the bassoon and will be conducted by Bert Helsen. Once more, a selection of young, talented musicians of Kunsthumaniora Brussel are ready to share their passion with you, while professional musicians will perform during the second part of the evening. You will be submerged by the complete sound spectrum of the bassoon and its interaction within music ensembles.

The bassoon is mostly known through compositions of the baroque and classic era (Vivaldi, Mozart and Weber). But over the last fifty years, composers started to experiment more and more with the possibilities of this instrument and new creations saw the unique sound range of the bassoon pushed to the edge.

The contrabassoon is even more obscure. Normally it supports the basses in the orchestras, next to the double basses, but one will discover this instrument playing solo to be much more lyrical. It seemed appropriate to create this special programme, as bassoon and contrabassoon practically never operate in solo or in dialogue with each other. After this ‘duel’ between both instruments, the ensemble will perform as a septet a creation of Kees Olthuis.

An evening not to be missed by all lovers of the warm, full and deep sounds of 'wood'.

Young Talent

Maximilien Lamouris (bassoon), Bérénice Awouter (violin), Elias Bonneux (viola) and Jef Permentier (cello).

1 bassoon and 3 string players of the Kunsthumaniora Brussel will perform the bassoon quartet in Sib major, composed by the Italian classical composer Franz Danzi. Danzi created an immense repertoire in almost every musical genre, including chamber music for winds and strings, a very popular style at the beginning of the nineteenth century.

Septet of the National Orchestra

Bert Helsen (bassoon) Philip Handschoewerker & Maria Elena Boila (violin), Katelijne Onsia (viola), Lesya Demkovich (cello), Svetoslav Dimitriev (double bass) and Filip Neyens (contrabassoon)

The Septet of the National Orchestra emerged from the need for a particular line-up, to be able to perform the composition ‘Introduction & Allegro’ by Kees Olthuis. Seven young soloists joined forces to deliver a unique and diverse programme in an exceptional line-up: string quintet, bassoon and contra bassoon. They will perform a.o Tõnu Kõrvits (Song for a distant friend) and Kees Olthuis (Introduction & Allegro).
Also at the programme, ‘Divertissement’ by Jean Françaix and ‘Creation’ by the Iranian composer Mahdis Golzar Kashani, that went recently in world premiere. Both compositions witnesses in a unique way the timbres and the character of the bassoon in its relationship with the strings. In ‘Divertissement’, one will also notify the extraordinary ‘complete’ sound of the string quartet, very similar to a complete string orchestra.
